Lewis and Clark Trail

President Jefferson sent Merriweather Lewis, William Clark, and the Corps of Discovery on a 3700 mile expedition for the purpose of science, exploration, and diplomacy. The E.C. Striders will take the same trail with the purpose of fun, fitness, and friendship.

Mike Mahers has agreed to track our mileage along the route of the Lewis and Clark expedition and Wayne Fieldhouse will be our expedition historian. All you need to do is e-mail Mike at Holland.mbmahers@gmail.com or call him at 616 405-9416 with the number of miles you have walked, and he will record the miles along the trail.

Look for the Lewis and Clark Trail map and the E.C. Striders progress at the Fitness Entrance C at Evergreen Commons. To date the E.C. striders have logged in 50 miles on the Lewis and Clark Trail!

 Looking Ahead

Thank You

A big thank you to Wayne Fieldhouse and his wife, Pat, for hosting our annual November potluck at Macatawa Bank. Karen Draeger, the Health and Fitness Director at Evergreen Commons, spoke to us regarding the importance of physical fitness at any age and a representative from Gazelle Sports was on hand to answer our questions on athletic shoes. A special award was presented E.C. Strider, Larry Brown and his walking partner “Peanuts”, for walking over 1400 miles in 2008. Thanks also all who attended the event and brought your favorite dishes for us to enjoy. You made the afternoon special.

Another thank you goes to Judy and John Madison for organizing the E.C. Striders involvement in the December 2nd “ Parade of Lights” in Downtown Holland and the all the Striders who participated in the fun parade.

Walking Tip for the Month

Bend your arms about 90 degrees at the elbow and move them back and forth when you walk. Swinging your arms energetically can help you burn a few more calories.
